Riedel Foundation Awards $108,000 to Support Hannibal YMCA

Hannibal YMCA CEO Eric Abts accepts a $108,000 grant from Riedel Foundation Lead Trustee Michael Bukstein.

The Riedel Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to the YMCA of Hannibal to support youth programs, childcare, and memberships for families who otherwise could not afford them. The funding will help ensure that the Y can continue its longstanding commitment that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. Another eight thousand dollars will cover costs associated with the Y’s third grade swim safety program.

In 2025 alone, the YMCA provided $153,205 in financial assistance to families in the Hannibal community. This support made it possible for more than 500 individuals to access memberships, childcare, and life‑enriching programs. Scholarships now make up 30% of all youth programming, underscoring the growing need for assistance as local families face rising costs.

“Supporting children and strengthening the Hannibal community has always been at the heart of the Riedel Foundation’s mission,” said Lead Trustee Michael Bukstein. “The YMCA plays a vital role in meeting those needs, and we are proud to help ensure these programs remain accessible to everyone in our community.”

The YMCA continues to experience significant demand across its programs:

  • Bright Beginnings Preschool is operating at full capacity with 48 children enrolled and more than 100 children on waiting lists for infant and toddler care.
  • After‑school programs welcome 100–250 youth ages 11–18 every day, requiring expanded space, supervision, and supplies. The Y recently hired a contractor to enlarge the VR Lounge and add a new classroom to better serve this growing group.
  • Summer camp enrollment continues to rise, and the Y is adding a fourth classroom to meet demand.
  • Senior programming is expanding rapidly as older adults become the Y’s fastest‑growing demographic. New offerings include Bingo, the Mile‑A‑Day Club, Chair Classes, Zumba Gold, and Active Older Adult luncheons to promote health and social connection.

“Support from the Riedel Foundation allows us to continue saying ‘yes’ to families who rely on us,” said YMCA CEO Eric Abts.  “These funds directly strengthen the programs that enrich the lives of children, parents, and seniors across Hannibal.”

In addition to the $100,000 grant for scholarships, the Riedel Foundation awarded another $8,000 to fully fund the Third Grade Swim program. Through this program, Hannibal third graders are transported to the Y for a water safety program. This is the 13th year for the program, funded entirely by grants from the Riedel Foundation.

For 26 years, the Riedel Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life in Hannibal by supporting organizations that strengthen youth, families, and the community. The Hannibal YMCA is the largest recipient of Riedel funds, receiving approximately $2.7 million since the Riedel Foundation was established in 2000.  The YMCA recently named its gym floors in honor of the Foundation’s founder, George H. Riedel.
