Hannibal—The George H. Riedel Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Kiwanis Club of Hannibal to support its long‑running winter coats and shoes program for local schoolchildren. The funding will help ensure that students in need have access to warm, properly fitted outerwear as colder weather approaches.
For more than 30 years, the Kiwanis Club has partnered with public and private elementary and middle schools to identify students who lack adequate winter clothing. Students receive an $80 certificate to shop at discounted rates at JCPenney, where Kiwanis members and store staff assist them in selecting properly sized coats and shoes. Last year, 117 students benefited from the program.
“Kiwanis has built a tradition of meeting essential needs with dignity,” said Pam Lightle, who is leading the program this year for Kiwanis. “A warm coat or a sturdy pair of shoes can make an immediate difference in a child’s daily life, affecting their comfort, confidence and ability to learn.”
The Riedel Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the Kiwanis coats and shoes program, awarding $28,000 over the last six years alone.
The Riedel Foundation was established in 2000 through a $5.4 million trust left by George H. Riedel, former president of F&M Bank. Grants are awarded exclusively to nonprofit agencies serving Hannibal residents. Since its founding, the Riedel Foundation has distributed more than $7.8 million in grants.
